There are many competitions for 4-H youth to participate in at State Field Day!

VIRTUAL Contests with Required Registration (May 13 @ 5:00pm)

State Presentation Day - Register

Volunteer evaluators provide written feedback to individual or teams of 4-H members on their presentations. Evaluation is criterion-based using a rubric. Types of presentations vary between demonstrations, prepared speech, interpretive reading, impromptu, and others.

  1. Youth presenters register online and select a time slot. Evaluators register online and select a time slot.
  2. During their scheduled time block, youth will log on with a computer/tablet or smart phone and present in front of a camera/webcam. 
  3. Evaluators enter scores digitally. 
  4. Awards will be announced at the Virtual Awards Ceremony on Sunday, May 31, 2020, 6:00-8:00pm. Evaluation forms will be emailed by June 12; certificates and pins will be mailed to UCCE 4-H county offices by June 30.

Photography Contest - Register

The California 4-H Photography Competition provides an opportunity for 4-H members ages 9-18 to showcase their best photographs taken within the past 4-H year. There are no prior requirements to enter this state level competition.

  1. Submit your photos when you register.
  2. Evaluations will be completed virtually.
  3. Results will be shared during the Awards Ceremony on May 31 at 6pm.
  4. Winning photos will be shared on Facebook and posted in our Flickr account.

Film Festival - Register

Video is a medium that is both an art and a science. 4-H has been using video to promote various aspects of the program and recruit new volunteers and members. Join the members of 4-H who have already contributed to the videos on the CA 4-H YouTube channel!

  1. Submit the link to your video when you register.
  2. Evaluations will be completed virtually.
  3. Results will be shared during the Awards Ceremony on May 31 at 6pm.

Robotics Contest - Register

Robotics can spark a youth’s interest and imagination or can be a stepping stone to a better understanding of core school subjects that can lead to rewarding careers in STEM related fields. Also, robots are FUN!

  1. May 30, 11:00am - Registered participants and teams log on to Robockly and connect on Zoom.
  2. Each contestant will demonstrate their RoboBlockly code and virtual robot task. When it’s your turn to present, share your screen to demonstrate your Robocklly code.
  3. Results will be shared during the Awards Ceremony on May 31 at 6pm.

Interview Contest - Register

The Interview Contest is a Public Speaking contest that gives members an opportunity to practice the real-life skill of applying for a job.

  1. Specific time slots will be decided jointly by youth & contest coordinators after the registration deadline, between May 18-31. 
  2. Evaluation forms will be emailed by June 12 by the contest coordinator. Certificates and pins will be mailed to UCCE 4-H county offices by June 30 (depending on shelter-in-place restrictions).

4-H Plant Science Contest

The contest provides opportunities for youth to increase their knowledge of horticultural plants and horticultural/plant science techniques, expand their ability to identify various plants, and interact with other youth interested in plant science. 

  1. On May 14, registered participants will receive: (1) PDF of photos of judging classes; (2) PDF of photos of plants to identify; (3) answer sheet
  2. Email completed answer sheet by May 27.
  3. Results will be shared during the Awards Ceremony on May 31 at 6pm.
  4. Note: this is not a qualifier for the National Youth Horticultural Association contest.

CANCELED 2020

State Fashion Revue

Volunteer evaluators provide feedback to 4-H members on their clothing and accessory choices using criterion-based rubrics. 2020 categories are Traditional, Consumer Science Purchased $40 limit, Box Challenge, Vintage Challenge, and Cosplay Challenge. 

4-H & FFA Livestock Quiz Bowl

4-H and FFA members are invited to participate in the State Livestock Quiz Bowl. The top 4-H team and the top FFA team at this contest will be eligible to compete at the Western National Round Up in Denver, Colorado. 

Judging Contest

The objective of judging in the 4-H program is to help members grow in their ability to think, reason, and make logical and scientific judgments. Judging is about making choices and decisions. In each class, youth rank four items based on a standard; typically ten classes. There will also be a small non-competitive Primary Division for Primaries to get judging experience. They will receive a certificate of participation and a participation ribbon.

Having an entomology project informs not only 4-H members but the public on how important insects are to our everyday life.
