BioPreferred Products

May 9, 2011

The USDA's BioPreferred program aims to increase the purchase, sale and use of biobased products.

What is a biobased product? Biobased products, “are composed wholly or significantly of agricultural ingredients – renewable plant, animal, marine or forestry materials…Biobased products help add value to commodities, create jobs in rural communities, increase U.S. energy independence by reducing the use of petroleum in manufactured products and may also reduce the introduction of fossil carbon into the atmosphere, thus mitigating potential climate change impacts.”

Consumers will be able to easily identify USDA certified biobased products. Each certified product will feature a label indicating the product has been independently certified to meet USDA BioPreferred program standards for biobased content. Products already certified include: bioplastics, plant-based cleaners, industrial lubricants, construction products, personal care items, and more.

There are currently over 2,000 U.S. companies producing biobased products, including several in Ventura County. Click here to find biobased production locations throughout the country.
