Dan Heims

Dan Heim
Since 1973, Dan Heims has been deeply involved in all facets of horticulture. He's currently the president of Terra Nova Nurseries, Inc. Dan's articles and photography have been featured in a number of magazines. He has taught horticulture courses, wholesaled exotic plants, and run his own design and build landscape business. He has hosted a weekly gardening show on radio (KKSN) and has appeared on the Martha Stewart TV Show. Dan's work and garden has also been featured in USA Today, Forbes, Better Homes and Gardens, Sunset Magazine, and Organic Gardening. His job description dictates that he must "travel the world and seek the newest perennials". Dan uses his unique blend of knowledge and humor as he speaks around the world. Dan has written books of horticultural humor called The Garden Clerk's Dictionary and Heucheras and Heucherellas.

Alan McHughen

Alan McHughen
Alan McHughen is a public sector educator, scientist and consumer advocate. After earning his doctorate at Oxford University, Dr. McHughen worked at Yale University and the University of Saskatchewan before joining the University of California, Riverside. A molecular geneticist with an interest in crop improvement and environmental sustainability, he helped develop US and Canadian regulations governing the safety of genetically engineered crops and foods. As an educator and consumer advocate, he helps non-scientists understand the environmental and health impacts of both modern and traditional methods of food production. His award winning book, Pandora's Picnic Basket; The Potential and Hazards of Genetically Modified Foods uses understandable, consumer-friendly language to explode the myths and explore the genuine risks of genetic modification (GM) technology.

Renee Shepherd

Renee Shepherd
Renee Shepherd is widely regarded as a pioneering innovator in introducing international specialty vegetables and herbs for home gardeners and gourmet restaurants.  She holds a Ph.D. from the University of California in Santa Cruz where she taught in the Environmental Studies department before founding Renee’s Garden.  You’re sure to have seen Renee's Garden seeds at garden centers, nurseries and online, using the helpful variety descriptions to plan and plant your garden.  The company offers fellow gardeners access to the high quality seed varieties otherwise available only to mail order shoppers.  When Renee isn't writing copy for seed packets or directing the company’s large trial garden, she can be found authoring cookbooks, speaking at national garden shows or enjoying the Santa Cruz Mountains.

Doug Tallamy

Doug Tallamy
Doug Tallamy is a professor in the Entomology and Wildlife Ecology department at the University of Delaware.  He has spent more than 33 years studying insects and their role in the environment including researching the impact of alien plants on native ecosystems, the interactions between plants and insects, and the conservation of  biodiversity.  Among Doug’s 80 publications is his 2007 book, Bringing Nature Home, where he links the abundance of native plant species to native wildlife.  Doug’s research-based presentation will empower UC Master Gardeners to have a significant role in saving California’s ecological communities.
