Application for 2019 UCCE Master Gardener Training - Madera County Residents

Note:  This application is for Madera County residents only.   The training will take place in Fresno at the UC Cooperative Extension office.  Your appointment as a UCCE Master Gardener, upon acceptance and completion of the course, will be in Madera County.  Hands-on training required as part of certification will be scheduled in Madera County.

I wish to submit my application to be considered for enrollment in the University of California Cooperative Extension Master Gardener training program.  My residence will determine my eligibility for appointment to the UCCE Master Gardener Program in Madera County.  I understand that if I am accepted and complete the course with a passing grade, I will become a certified First Year UCCE Master Gardener volunteer.

I understand the following:

  1. Submitting my application is the first step.
  2. I am also invited to attend the Meet the Master Gardeners informational meeting at the Madera Center Community College, 30277 Avenue 12, Madera, CA, Room R3-A, (Date to be announced later), though my attendance is not a requirement for acceptance into the training.
  3. I will be contacted to set up an interview after the deadline for accepting applications, September 30, 2018.

I understand the following conditions:

  • I must attend all 16 weeks of class, beginning Thursday, January 3, 2019 from 8:00am to 1:00 pm. Every Thursday for 16 weeks at the UCCE Office in Fresno.
  • In exchange for the training made possible by the University of California, I must complete 50 qualifying volunteer (VOL) hours to the UCCE Master Gardener program within 18 months of beginning the program, and no later than June 30, 2017.  Thereafter, the fiscal year requirement is 25 Volunteer hours (VOL) and 12 Continuing Education (CE) hours.
  • There are Master Gardener events for which I must be available as a volunteer docent, including the annual Glorious Garden Tour in April.
  • The primary method of program communication is electronic and I must have a functioning email address and access to the internet to receive weekly class communications, complete class assignments, sign up for required class hands-on trainings and to receive and access other Master Gardener documents and communications dispensed online.
  • I am required to log my training hours online via the UCCE Master Gardener Volunteer Management System (VMS), for which I will be trained.
  • Required hands-on training modules may involve prolonged walking and standing.

I understand that if I am selected, I must undergo a DOJ background check that requires fingerprinting at a cost to me of approximately $20 in Madera County, to be completed by December 1, 2018.  This clearance is required in addition to any other DOJ clearance I may have on file for other entities.  I further understand that if I am selected, there will be a $200 fee for classroom expenses, textbook, materials, badges, guest speaker expenses, etc., which must be paid by December 1, 2018.

I understand that the goal of the UCCE Master Gardener Program is to deliver University of California science-based gardening information to the public and that I must follow University of California policies and procedures while volunteering as a UCCE Master Gardener.
