I read a letter recently addressed to the consumers of agricultural products, a.k.a. everyone. Damian Mason posted a forthright letter to his LinkedIn profile addressing the current attacks on agriculture. See link below. In his article Damian references the Occupy movement that targeted the wealthiest of Americans, the one percent, and he points out that agricultural producers make up only one-percent of the population of Americans also. While his letter calls for an end of attacks on agriculture, I would like to redirect the focus a bit. You, the agricultural producer, make up less than one percent of the population of the United States. Ninety-nine percent of Americans have a very poor understanding of what you do, how you do it, and/or why you do it. The public needs to be better educated about agricultural production. Now I wish I had the answer of how to effectively educate those who are uninformed and re-educate those who have been misinformed, but I don't. I'll take suggestions though. :)
