What: Goat Breeding Workshop
When: July 18 at 2:00-3:30 pm
Where: Tractor Supply, Murrieta
Price: $5.00 recommended donation to 4-H
Description: In this workshop, experienced breeder Marie Orillion (Owlhaven Farm) will teach you the basics of breeding dairy goats, as well as introduce you to more advanced topics, such as the use of genetics data.
Questions addressed include:
1. How do I protect my goat's health during breeding season? (includes biosecurity, nutrition, and other care)
2. At what age can I safely breed my goat? When should I retire my doe?
3. How do I know if my goat is in heat? Can I bring my doe into heat?
4. How do I choose a buck?
5. What is the difference between linebreeding and inbreeding? Why should I care?
6. How do I breed my goats?
7. How do I know if my goat is pregnant?
8. How do I know when she will kid?
9. How many kids can she have?
A follow-up workshop will be offered at Owlhaven Farm (date TBD). The follow-up will only be available to individuals who attended the introductory workshop. During the follow-up, attendees will have an opportunity to examine breeding pairs and discuss why those pairings were selected.
