Owners of backyard chickens who observe illness or increased mortality in their birds should call their veterinarian or the California Department of Food Agriculture sick bird hotline at (866) 922-2473.
Reduce the risk of bird flu
To reduce the risk of avian influenza transmission, chickens should be kept separate from wild birds and monitored for signs of illness or increased mortality. The CDFA also urges owners to take the following necessary and crucial precautions:
- If you have a pond or body of water that can attract waterfowl to or near your facility, consider draining if feasible.
- Provide housing to confine domestic poultry and/or enclose an exercise area with netting.
- Avoid use of water that comes from sources where waterfowl may congregate during migration.
- Ideally, owners of poultry should try to avoid waterfowl hunting during migration. Otherwise, ensure clothing, footwear, vehicles, etc. used during hunts are laundered and/or disinfected.
- Permit only essential workers and vehicles on premises and provide disposable coveralls, boots and head coverings for visitors.
- Clean and disinfect vehicles and equipment entering or leaving the premises.
- Control movement associated with the disposal of mortality, litter and manure.
TEENS:
Public Speaking Opportunity
Sonoma County Forum – a group of business and professional women who meet twice a month to hear interesting speakers discuss topics related to business, education, health, government, the community, the environment, the creative process, and programs that benefit citizens in our communities. I am hoping you can help me find someone to talk about the wonderful impact 4-H has on our community and our youth.
This would be primarily an information session for our membership. We have a table in the back of the room if you would like to place handouts for the members.
We begin our meetings with breakfast starting at 7:30 am, followed by the speaker's presentation at 8 am. We allow 30 minutes for the presentation, which includes time at the end for questions from the audience. While we don't provide honorariums, we can promise you a delicious breakfast and an interested and enthusiastic audience! We have approximately 40-50 members attend each meeting. We do have a screen, laptop computer and an LCD projector for you to use if you need one.
I have one last date available this fall –October 1st. I am hoping that this date will work for your schedule. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Regards,
Marty Wait

Hello
I am Amanda Wilson of AppleBblossom Micro Farm. These are purebred/pedigreed standard Rex Rabbits. I had an overabundance of babies and would like to donate a trio of castor to a 4-Her that wants them. They are show quality. Born on May 13Th. All brother and sisters as my understanding of meat pen goes thats ok. However if they don't line up the deadlines for meat pen I would be willing add a 4th rabbit and maybe 4 youths could have bunnies? It is my professional opinion that they are better as meat pen one of the doors is very promising as a show doe. They are all castor and all related. Let me know if this is something that would be beneficial to the youth.

Dear Exhibitors and Friends of the Science Festival,
Summer has sure flown by! There are only three short months until the 2015 Bay Area Science Festival, the largest free celebration of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math education in the Bay Area. The 5th annual North Bay Science Discovery Day will be on Saturday, October 24th, at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds. Please take a moment to enter your contact information, activity details, etc. at www.bayareascience.org/get-involved/apply/.
Last year, over 12,000 visitors of all ages had a great time at the NBSDD. This year, we expect a bigger turnout. Already, both new exhibitors and visitor favorites are committing to bring the hands-on activities that make for such a special experience.
The North Bay is fortunate to have a rich array of available STEM resources. Discovery Day provides young students an “aha!” moment engaging with practitioners and content from these fields. It also provides an excellent opportunity for exhibitors to network and increase community visibility. Plus, the learning is fun for exhibitors and visitors alike!
Additional exhibitor options and sponsorship opportunities are still available. Please contact me with any questions about registration or logistics for 2015. Find more info and the latest updates at BayAreaScience.org and NorthBayScience.org.
Thank you for helping to celebrate the curiosity, inspiration, and education that drive innovation in the Bay Area!
Sincerely,
Lyman Black

My husband and I are having an event hosting the President of the University of Idaho, Dr. Chuck Staben and his wife Mary Beth, and other alumnae at our home in the Bennett Valley on Tuesday, Sept 8th from about 6pm to 9 pm. We will have a casual sit down dinner. I thought of asking the 4-H to help with this event because of the Universities long agricultural history, thinking that perhaps it might be an interesting exposure to your 4-H kids as a potential choice for their advanced education. There will be other representatives from the University and we can request that the Dean of the College of Agriculture or Natural Resources attend this event to connect with the 4-Hers. In talking to Susan Hansen she suggested that we contact Lombardi's to prepare the food and have the 4-H provide members to serve and clean up. There will be a presentation by the president after dinner. I am thinking that we would probably need 4 to 6 youngsters and one adult to help.
We are not offering compensation but would plan to donate at the appropriate level to the foundation or at the club level. We hope that you might find this an interesting project and that there are a few people who would like to join us on that evening.
The University of Idaho is located in northern Idaho in Moscow, Idaho on a truly lovely campus dating back to 1879 and is a wonderful place to spend 4 years earning a degree.
Thank you for considering this project. We can be reached at 707-529-5842 (David) or 529-5845 (Mary) or at mapoe@poeranch.com. We are located in Santa Rosa at 5100 Burnham Ranch Road.
Thank you. Mary and David Poe
We would probably need people at least over age 16.
Petaluma Animal Services Foundation is holding their annual fundraiser on August 14th from 7-10 p.m. We are looking for approximately 5-10 volunteers to help in the afternoon of Thursday, August 13th and a few at the event on Friday. On Thursday we will need assistance moving tables, auction items, etc. to get the room ready. On Friday at the event we'll need some friendly and outgoing volunteers to help with selling raffle tickets. We'll also need assistance breaking down at the end of the night. It would be helpful for our planning if we knew at least by the 1st of August how many volunteers we might expect, if any.
Please let me know if you need any additional information regarding our volunteer need or the event. Thank you very much for your assistance with this.
