Club Officers and Leaders
The Merced County 4-H Leadership Retreat and Officer Training for the year will be on Saturday August 28 from 8:30am-4:00pm at the Castle Challenger Science and Technology Center in Atwater. Bring your new officer team, volunteers, and other members interested in leadership!
The Merced County 4-H All-Stars and guest speakers will make sure that all officers are ready to kick off another great 4-H year! We have guests from the community coming to help new officers learn their roles and plan for a great 4-H year. Herb Wood of the Courthouse Museum will explain what historians do and give tips for making your scrapbook. 4-H alumni, Stephanie Obad will teach recreation officers how to lead fun club activities. Twila Stout from Toastmasters International will work with Presidents and Secretaries helping them in their leadership roles.
The day will include food, officer training, icebreaker games, a club resource box, club planning time, club relays, and more. Sign-up online today and tell your club leader that you are going to the Leadership Retreat! Make sure that your club is represented!

2010 National Youth Science Experiment
Hello everyone, my name is Luana Xiong. Last year I conducted an Emerald Star project on promoting the 2009 National Youth Science Experiment and I had a lot of fun doing it. In June I submitted a proposal for funding to get supplies and materials to promote the 2010 NYSE. This year the experiment is on water and climate change and is called 4-H20.
Since I have already done this as an Emerald Star project, maybe someone else would like to take this on for 2010. The main goal of this project is to spread knowledge that is attached to this experiment and create awareness from this experiment. The person chairing the NYSE will be promoting the 4-H20 experiment at 4-H and community events. You will most likely present to youth and teach them about the experiment. There are others that can also assist, such as UCM professor Matt Meyer and other 4-H members to help perform the experiment. The experiment is set for 4-H Week on October so we hope to find someone as soon as possible. If you know anyone or you are interested please contact the 4-H Office at 385-7418 or you can contact me for more info at E-Mail- xiongy96@yahoo.com or Phone- (209) 723-2453
Thank you, Luana Xiong
Animal Science Leaders Wanted
Bio-security and the risks with animal health and care are a great concern with all of us who raise and care for animals. One of the newer animal science activity books soon to come out will promote a better understanding about Bio-Security and what you can do about it. In fact Merced County had five project groups do pilot testing on these activities and really enjoyed them. In getting ready for the release of the new materials the UC Davis Vet Med Extension program and 4-H are developing a set of proficiency levels for members to achieve based on Bio-security. The extension specialist is looking for 2-4 project leaders who would like to help with the design and testing of these proficiency questions and levels. If you are interested in having your project as part of this testing please contact Richard at the 4-H office 385-7418 or rlmahacek@ucdavis.edu for more details.
