DAVIS--Andrew Sutherland, who received his doctorate in entomology with major professor Michael Parrella, professor and chair of the UC Davis Department of Entomology, has just accepted the UC ANR position of Area Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Advisor for the San Francisco Bay Area, effective April 1.
Based at the UC Cooperative Extension county office in Alameda, Sutherland will serve Alameda, Contra Costa, San Mateo, San Francisco and Santa Clara counties. He will coordinate a multi-county extension, education and applied research program to address urban and community IPM, with an emphasis on arthropods.
Sutherland received his master's degree in horticulture and agronomy in 2005 and his doctorate in entomology in 2009, both at UC Davis while in Parrella's laboratory studying mycophagous coccinellids for use within greenhouse IPM programs, augmentative biological control of whiteflies, and thrips sampling methods.
Since July 2009, Sutherland has been employed as a postdoctoral researcher in the Doug Gubler lab of the UC Davis Department of Plant Pathology. Sutherland headed several ongoing research projects including early in situ detection of grape powdery mildew using insects as bioindicators and biosensors, and mosaic virus incidence reduction via aphid vector interference in commercial melons.
