For 4-H Professionals: Latino Youth Development 12-Week Online Course 2023

Engaging Latino Youth, Families, and Communities from the Ground Up is a hybrid, 12-week online course for 4-H professionals who work with after school staff or 4-H volunteer educators. The course will help build awareness and skills to engage Latino youth and families in youth development programming.

Self-Study Week Office Hours (2-Hours Optional) Live, 2-Hour Session with presentations, group discussions, and reflection

Content

Introduction & Intersectional Identities (January 20) - Increase participants’ self-awareness of their identities. 

  1. Latinos in the United States (January 27) Establish agreement among participants on shared language related to access, equity and belonging we will use in this course; frame the heterogeneity of the Latino population in the United States and contrast it with the monolithic portrayals in mainstream media; and increase awareness of an asset based approach to map the ecosystem of Latino populations and places
  2. Building Relationships with Latino Communities (February 10) Review the importance of  the use of Latino asset mapping tools to build community relationships; utilize existing  tools for building relationships with Latino communities. 
  3. Organizational Infrastructure to Support Latino Youth Engagement  (February 24) - Understand how organizational infrastructure influences Latinx youth engagement.
  4. Program Elements (March 10) - Create a mutual learning of the program elements influencing Latino youth program participation; and present important considerations for program leaders to keep in mind while engaging Latino youth.
  5. Conceptual Framework of Effective Latino Youth Serving Organizations (March 24) - Understand the guiding principles of successful Latino youth programs
  6. Organizational Change (April 7) - Develop strategies for advancing organizational culture and practices; and support 4-H professionals in crafting a plan for their own organizations.
