Obtaining Institutional Review Board Approval For HIPPA Conformity
Once you have selected a methodology and designed an instrument, you should communicate with the Institutional Review Board (IRB) that is responsible for approving research with Human Subjects for your institution or organization. At some institutions, the review board will treat a survey-based assessment of an IPM program the same way it would treat a traditional psychological research experiment. Other institutions will employ expedited reviews or may even determine that your survey is exempt. You nonetheless always want the review board at your institution to be aware of what you are doing so they can ensure that the privacy and well-being of survey respondents is protected and that institutional policies are being followed. More information on HIPPA and IRB.
Obtaining Approval For The Paper Reduction Act Conformity
If you are planning to use a federal government system to collect, analyze and/or store the survey information you may also need to file your plan with the US Office of Management and Budget (OMB) to assure it is compliant with the Paper Reduction Act. More information on the Paper Reduction Act.
Caution
If you do not meet these requirements you may have problems publishing results from your work. Additionally, you may risk serious legal consequences. Generally, the IRB and OMB exist to support you and your efforts to follow the rules. It is worthwhile to establish a relationship with your IRB. Additionally, you may want to develop a similar working relationship with OMB if you anticipate using federal systems to collect, analyze or store your data.
