Michael E. Janes
Strategic Communications Director
Michael Janes has worked in the public relations and communications field for more than 20 years. Since February 2015 he has served as director of strategic communications at the University of California, Division of Agriculture and Natural Resources, where he develops, directs, and implements strategy and communications support for UC ANR.
From 2002 to early 2015, Mike served as PR and communications officer at Sandia National Laboratories/California, where he spearheaded public outreach efforts for a national security laboratory made up of some 1,000 scientists, engineers, and researchers.
In that capacity, Mike identified strategic news opportunities, cultivated relationships with key reporters and news outlets, and generated print and broadcast media coverage that brought attention to Sandia's research and technical achievements. Working with Sandia’s scientists and other stakeholders such as business development leadership and government relations, he penned dozens of articles and press releases, produced numerous video pieces, and executed myriad communications campaigns for both external and internal audiences.
Before coming to California, Mike worked for nine years as a PR professional in Washington, D.C., most recently serving as the director of media relations at the American Institute of Architects (AIA) from 1999–2002. He also served as senior manager of media relations at Special Olympics International (SOI) from 1994–1999 where, among other duties, he was the primary point of contact for media operations at World Games in New Haven, CT, (1995) and in Toronto (1997). He also managed Special Olympics’ 30th Anniversary event in Chicago (1998), an occasion that featured guest Muhammad Ali and generated media coverage on NBC’s Today show, USA Today, and other national media outlets. During his tenure at SOI, Mike had the privilege of working closely with the organization’s founders and senior leadership, including Eunice Kennedy Shriver, Robert Sargent Shriver, Jr., and current chairman Timothy P. Shriver.
Mike's work over the years has led to extensive coverage in numerous major U.S. media outlets, including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Sports Illustrated, U.S. News & World Report, and ABC World News. At Sandia, he has led media campaigns that have resulted in stories in the San Francisco Chronicle, Washington Post, National Geographic, Popular Science, and a variety of science trade publications.
Prior to embarking on a PR career, Mike served for four years as an electronic intelligence specialist in the U.S. Air Force, where he took part in Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm (1990–1991). After his Air Force stints in Germany and Saudi Arabia, Mike returned to the Middle East as a civilian in 1992 and worked for a year as a recreation therapist in a Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, hospital.
Mike earned a B.A. in broadcast communications from Western Washington University and an M.A. in strategic communication and leadership from Seton Hall University.
