Prior to joining UCCE, José was a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Wisconsin – Madison, where he worked on agronomic and weed management projects in alfalfa and pasture systems. Specific research interests included the identification of management practices and environmental factors to ensure successful establishment of alfalfa interseeded into corn silage; sustainable management of waterhemp (Amaranthus tuberculatus, a pigweed species such as palmer amaranth and redroot pigweed) in established alfalfa fields; and weed control, clover selectivity and resulting yield of grass-clover mixed swards treated with florpyrauxifen-benzyl + 2,4-D (ProClova, a pre-mix for pastures not registered in California).
José earned a Ph.D. in Agronomy with focus in Weed Science from the University of Florida and an M.S. in Crop Protection from the São Paulo State University (UNESP), SP, Brazil, in 2013. His Ph.D. research focused on developing and implementing integrated management practices to reduce giant smutgrass populations in bahiagrass pastures; whereas his M.S. research focused on investigating the selectivity of several residual herbicides applied pre-planting of pre-budded sugarcane seedlings. José earned his B.S. in Agronomy from the São Paulo State University (UNESP), SP, Brazil, in 2011.
Based in Merced, José can be reached at (209) 385-7403 and firstname.lastname@example.org.
