The Desert Research and Extension Center (DREC) is one the University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources' nine Research and Extension Centers (RECs). DREC was established in 1912 and is located on 255 acres in Holtville, CA. DREC conducts innovative and relevant agricultural, natural resources, and environmental research and education programs in arid regions. The Center's primary research areas are desert agriculture, field crops, alfalfa breeding, vegetable crops, livestock environmental and feedlot management, irrigation and drainage management, and pest management. DREC is also home to the widely recognized and reaching Farm Smart agricultural education program. The program focuses on major issues occurring in our local communities including access to high quality education and food, healthy habits, and pathways to higher education. The center has strong partnerships with diverse stakeholders locally and in Arizona and Mexico.
DREC's facilities include a main office building, greenhouses, research laboratory building, mechanic's shop, numerous storage buildings, walk-in refrigerated coolers, a weather station, a fully automated sprinkler area, and a reservoir used for water storage and irrigation. DREC is also headquarters to UC Imperial County Cooperative Extension Offices.
Under the supervision of the Center Superintendent, perform routine building maintenance including plumbing and electrical, fire safety, office furniture and equipment install and repairs; assist in rough carpentry; maintain grounds/landscape including irrigation system repairs; clean and maintain office, classrooms, and all common areas, maintain supply of custodial supplies. Position performs a variety of tasks to help ensure facility is safe and clean for resident staff, visiting UC employees, volunteers and the public.
