Staff and academic people managers, are you ready for a leap in your management development? If yes, we encourage you to apply to the Management Skills Assessment Program (MSAP) by Wednesday, Jan. 18.
This program is designed to assess the management skills of high potential, early career supervisors and managers for future leadership opportunities at the University of California. The next MSAP will be April 17-20, 2017, at the UCLA Conference Center in Lake Arrowhead.
Two seats for the spring 2017 MSAP program are available for UC ANR employees.
Eligibility requirements include
- Full-time career status with a current, satisfactory (or better) performance evaluation
- Career Tracks job classification as a supervisor or manager
Participants will be selected based on an evaluation of the applicant's career goals in management, level of skills essential for performing management functions, and demonstrated career path and/or strong commitment to management skill development. The supervisor of the applicant is also required to complete a supporting statement as part of the application process and commit to participate in the required post-program activities.
The cost for the program is $1,095 (including all program materials and room and board for three days and two nights). This does not include transportation or other related travel costs. ANR will cover the cost of the program (including eligible travel expenses) for the successful applicants.
Participants can expect a demanding program of activities from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. each day, with no time in between to check email or attend to work responsibilities. Assessees also eat with other assessees and share small condos.

The University invites comments on Proposed Revised Presidential Policy Business and Finance Bulletin (BFB) – G-28, Travel Regulations.
Proposed revisions allow reimbursement, in limited circumstances, for travel (including childcare) expenses for spouses, domestic partners, dependent-care providers, and dependents of employees traveling on University business and candidates for employment at the University of California traveling to UC locations for recruitment purposes.

The Informatics and Geographic Information Systems (IGIS) Statewide Program now offers online office hours for all ANR staff and academics. Every Monday from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m., an IGIS staff member will be hanging out on Zoom hoping to hear from ANR people and discuss all things GIS.
They are ready to discuss issues such as these:
- how to use GIS in your work - needs assessments, research, communication, operations, evaluation, etc.
- where to find spatial data
- going from a question to a GIS analysis
- making a quick and dirty map for print or online
- software recommendations
- ArcGIS tools, workflows, and trouble-shooting
- spatial data analysis with R
- spatial stats
- WebGIS and Story Maps
- tools for mobile data collection
- storing and sharing data
- what you can do with drone imagery, and how to get it
- what you can try yourself, and when you may need to get help
- the IGIS GIS Service Center - what they do and how it works
No question is too big or too small! And while they may not be able to answer every question, they will either find out or point you in the right direction.

- Online office hours are for ANR personnel only.
- To help ensure that the most appropriate person is available to talk with you, they ask that you sign up for a time slot, with a brief description of your topic or question.
- Zoom connection information will be sent when you sign up.
- Can't make Monday afternoons? Choose 'Other' as the time slot when you sign up, and they will contact you to set up an alternative time.
- If you have a slow internet connection, you can turn off your web-cam or simply phone in.
The University of California has launched the “I am a UC Entrepreneur” campaign to highlight entrepreneurship across the UC system.
Students, faculty, staff, postdocs and alumni are invited to submit a 30-second video sharing what makes them an entrepreneur to: https://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/entrepreneurs. The videos will be used to highlight and publicize individual stories, as well as the breadth and depth of entrepreneurial efforts across the UC system.
Everyone who submits a video will receive a "UC Entrepreneur" T-shirt. In addition, one eligible student from each campus will be selected at random to attend a special lunch with Christine Gulbranson, senior vice president of innovation and entrepreneurship, and UC President Janet Napolitano.
“This campaign is about celebrating and recognizing the creativity and passion that makes UC an innovation powerhouse,” Gulbranson said. “Entrepreneurial activity is booming across the UC system. I can't wait to see everyone's stories.”
The campaign launched during Global Entrepreneurship Week (Nov. 14-20), an annual celebration in over 160 countries that aims to inspire people around the world to explore their entrepreneurial potential. In the United States, Global Entrepreneurship Week has fostered more than 2,000 local events.
UC has a growing focus on entrepreneurship, with more than two dozen incubators and accelerators across the system and myriad student clubs devoted to the topic. Student entrepreneurship groups and clubs are encouraged to promote the campaign, host video parties and assist budding UC entrepreneurs in making their 30-second video.
Videos submitted as part of the campaign will be featured on the website. Participants who want to be in the drawing for lunch with Gulbranson and Napolitano must submit their video by 11:59 p.m. PST, Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2017. The site will continue to accept and feature video submissions through 2017, however, with participants continuing to receive T-shirts.

Thanks to everyone who participated in UC ANR's #GivingTuesday campaign on Nov. 29, we received a total of $39,252 in donations from 210 individuals. After adding the California 4-H Foundation's matching funds, the total was $63,252.
Any time during the year, people can donate to UC ANR. The website https://donate.ucanr.edu has links to all of ANR's programs, research and extension centers and extension offices and allows donors to designate the program or location to which they wish to donate.
