On June 10, 2013 an article titled "Defining Sustainable Beef: truly a global effort" was printed in the Western Livestock Journal (have I mentioned recently that I'm a little bit behind on my reading?). The article talked about a committee formed within the Global Roundtable for Sustainable Beef (GRSB) whose goal is to define "sustainable beef". As noted in the article, there is broad geographic representation on the committee, whose goal is to be as accurate and complete as possible with the final definition.

The California Beef Council has been showcasing Beef Checkoff dollars at work in the CCA magazine. In the May 2013 issue (I'm a little behind in my reading!), a blog called "The Beef Factor" was highlighted. Registered dietician Katy Tenner posts at http://calibeef.blogspot.com on a multitude of subjects and she also posts lots of recipes and ideas for cooking with beef. Check it out! Katy's done a great job with the blog.

Recently, I was doing some reading, trying to catch up on a stack of Western Livestock Journals, and I came across an article reporting that Mark Lynas, an early activist who opposed genetically engineered food (commonly known as GM or GMO), has not only changed his mind, but he is now just as passionate about the environmental benefits of GM food. He also extols the tremendous importance of using GM foods as a tool to help feed the world's growing population. The original article can be accessed at the Western Livestock Journal's website, for those who suscribe to the weekly newsletter. But for those who do not, a similar article was printed on slate.com.
