4H-ers Join the Revolution

Local 4H-ers join the Revolution of Responsibility and organize sew days for charity. 4H is an enrichment program providing “positive youth development through activities in science literacy, healthy living, and citizenship”. Lucas Doiel & Courtney Creighton from St. Anthony’s 4-H in Atwater got together and applied for a $1000 grant to make 100 pillowcases for in-need organizations. The proposal was approved in February and the first planned sew day was held at the Merced County 4H Fashion Revue in April. 4H members learned how to sew a pillowcase. Some of these members had never sewn before and the result was 18 pillowcases. Three more sew days were held during spring break, June and July. Lucas and Courtney also asked for help from several Merced county 4H clubs including OLF and St. Anthony’s, to make pillowcases for the Revolution of Responsibility. The total pillowcases made are now over 100 and counting!
The next goal is to get local groups together with local 4H’ers for a community sew day on September 15, 2012 at the Merced County 4H classroom located on Wardrobe Ave. Lucas and Courtney are hoping to reach a new goal of 200 pillowcases. After completing the pillowcases they will be donated to different organizations in October. To honor the sacrifices made on 9/11, St. Anthony's 4-H club dedicated the weekend to community service. They started the weekend by first of all preparing for a rummage sale to be held on Saturday. All the proceeds from the sale were given to Hinds Hospice and St. Vincent de Paul charities. Part of the club also went to Merced to decorate at the American Legion Hall. The local chapter hosted the State Legion Biker's Convention Then Saturday we worked the sale. Finally on Sunday the club served food and drinks to the people of Atwater after the 9/11 Parade. What a great weekend of service.

St. Anthony's 4-H has adopted a F-80 jet at Castle Air Museum. This will entail club members washing the airplane every month and maintaining the area around the plane. Our crew chief is Mr. Dalia. He had to be trained in how to care for the plane as it is an antique. This will also be used as a club community service project.
After adopting our plane, we put up a booth at the open cock pit day on Sept. 4th. There, we were responsible for telling visitors about our plane. Members researched information about our plane to share. We were also able to give out information about St. Anthony's 4-H and 4-H in general.

Weaver 4-H’s Downtown Shootout
Weaver 4-H’s Photography project embarked on a new venture this past spring and participated in the local Saturday Shootout headed by local professional photographer, Jay Sousa. It all started with a small newspaper article announcing Mr. Sousa’s plan to invite amateur photographers to join him for a monthly walk around downtown Merced to take pictures. Weaver’s photography project leader, Karen Wallace saw the article and asked Mr. Sousa if he would mind her project members joining his group.
The group, known as the “Saturday Shootout”, met the first Saturday of each month beginning in February. The group met early— very early, and with the help of some Starbuck’s coffee, set out for our adventure. We were joined by several other local photographers who also answered Mr. Sousa’s invitation. During our monthly shootouts, Mr. Sousa helped with camera angles, lighting, and subject matter to photograph as he led us down the alleyways, sidewalks, and storefronts of our Main Street downtown.
It was Jay Sousa’s hope the project would conclude with a gallery showing of our work at his Gallery on the Square in Downtown Merced. In July, the planning began for our very first gallery show and on Friday, August 26th the idea became a reality with our opening reception! Along with our other Saturday Shootout friends and Mr. Sousa himself, Weaver 4-H members Gabrielle Calderon, Vanessa Mendonca, Kate Wallace, and leader Karen Wallace presented their favorite selections in the gallery. The reception was a huge success with an impressive turnout of friends, family, and the community.
If you have a chance, stop by Jay Sousa’s Galley on the Square at Bob Hart Square in downtown Merced and see the wonderful works of art we and the other members of the shootout have for sale and show. The photos will hang in Mr. Sousa’s galley for several more weeks. Please check them out!

We wish to also thank our new photography friends we met on our morning walks for their continual encouragement and kindness shown to us. Without all of these great people, none of this would be possible.
