Recommendations for Backyard Poultry Owners in Areas Where Local Health Emergencies Were Declared Following the Northern California Fires Maurice Pitesky , UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine-Cooperative Extension In addition to all the destruction and inhalation of smoke associated with the recent fires in Northern California, one of the unfortunate legacies remaining are chemical contamination of land, soil and water. The wildfire debris can include household hazardous waste (e.g. batteries and other electronic waste, paints, flammable liquids), building material (e.g. stucco, sheetrock, joint compound, asbestos siding and pipe insulation), pesticides, and fire suppression chemicals that may have been used. For example, ash debris from the California wildfires from 2007 was found to contain heavy metals that could cause long term health effects with exposure at high levels. Unfortunately our backyard chickens typically live off the soil and hence are at risk for exposure to some of the chemicals in the debris. Since backyard chickens are food animals with respect to egg and meat production, there is a risk that some of these substances may be ingested by chickens and deposited inside eggs which are then laid by the chickens. Unfortunately, there is limited scientific data on this issue. To that point there are no controlled studies, to our knowledge, that have assessed whether many of these chemicals can be found in eggs following ingestion by chickens. In addition, withdrawal periods following exposure are also not understood. What can you do? The concern to human health is with respect to the consumption of eggs and poultry meat from chickens exposed to the above listed toxic debris as a result of the recent fires. Hence out of an abundance of caution, if you live in an area where residents were advised to not clean up any debris associated with the fire or you suspect that your birds were foraging in burnt areas, we recommend not eating eggs from those hens until they are tested by a diagnostic lab. Therefore, we encourage people in affected areas to submit eggs to the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine for testing. Testing costs will be free. For submission, please mail up to 6 eggs overnight to the following address: UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine Attn: Dr. Maurice Pitesky 1 Shields Drive VM 3B Room 4007 Davis, CA 95616 Please include the following information: Address where birds are located Number of birds in your flock For further questions please contact Dr. Birgit Puschner or Dr. Pitesky at the following email addresses: bpuschner@ucdavis.edu mepitesky@ucdavis.edu |

Enrollment Due by December 1, 2017 Every 4-H Club must have enrollment turned into the office by December 1. This includes your member payment form and a check for the fees for all members and volunteers. When we receive this list and payment, we can begin confirming your members. There are several who have been to meetings and say they are in 4-H this year but we are not seeing them in the enrollment systems. Members and Leaders are not allowed to participate in 4-H activities at any level, if they are not enrolled. Enrollment coordinators are responsible for making sure that each family attending meetings has enrolled and paid their fees. This is for the protection of all involved. The Season of Giving Before we know it, we will be in the holiday season where our 4-H clubs often turn to using their hands for larger service and making the season better for all. As you make your plans, please keep these things in mind: 4-H does not allow clubs to donate money to other organizations. This is true of many non-profits as this activity is outside the scope of their missions. You MAY have a fundraiser and purchase goods that you then donate. Service Learning vs. Community Service. 4-H is a youth development organization, so developing our youth is our primary mission. When planning your service activities, be sure that youth are brainstorming who the recipients should be or what part of the community should be supported. Have youth form a committee to lead the activity and coordinate elements like sign ups and collections. When the project is complete, be sure to have time to talk about the project, the impact it made, and any other reflections that youth might want to share. These elements help create a lifelong attitude of help and serving. Giving Tuesday: The California State 4-H Foundation will once again participate in Giving Tuesday. This day is the first Tuesday after Thanksgiving and encourage people to think of their favorite non-profits as a part of their annual gift giving plans. Donors make their gift through a convenient online portal, and can designate the county and club where they would like their gift to go. The Foundation will then send the donations to the county offices where they will be distributed to the clubs. A complete Giving Tuesday toolkit is already available: http://4h.ucanr.edu/GivingTuesday/ A reminder that Salvation Army Bell-Ringing is Not Permitted. 4-H may not support or organize Salvation Army bell-ringing activities for 4-H members, projects, or community service/service learning. The Salvation Army is an evangelical organization. 4-H policies establish that 4-H units may not fundraise to support groups or organizations that fall within the category of being religious or political in nature or purpose. 2018 National Youth Summit on Agri-Science Join delegates from across the country to explore Why science in agriculture is important, and why it matters to me and my community. Western Region Volunteer Development Opportunities Dear Valued 4-H Volunteer, In order to meet the changing needs of 4-H volunteers, the Western Region Program Leaders, have charged the Western Region Volunteer Specialists (WRVS) the task of seeking input and making recommendations about 4-H volunteer learning opportunities in the west. The goals of this effort throughout the Western Region are to:
The reason for this work is that if 4-H volunteers increase participation in 4-H learning opportunities over time then positive youth development and program quality will increase for 4-H youth. Volunteers throughout the Western Region will have opportunities to provide input toward volunteer learning strategies. The timeline is: To accomplish this work, the WRLF 2019 scheduled to be held in Utah is canceled while the recommendations are developed. Every effort will be made to provide 4-H volunteers with relevant and useful regional professional development opportunities as quickly as possible depending on the results of the listening tools. We look forward to your participation in one or more of the listening opportunities to provide feedback to this important work. From the 4-H Youth Development Advisor, Steven Worker Pesident's Letter - Naomi Edwards It has certainly been a hard October and early November. We have seen and experienced many moments. As I type this letter to you, I am thinking of the fabulous families represented here. I have seen and heard stories of our 4H family. I have seen the H-Head; quickly forming plans to distribute comfort blankets, food and clothing. H-Hands, sorting thousands of pounds of food and clothing. H-Health groups delivering essentials for living: soap, shampoo, toothbrushes, and towels. H-Heart, families rose up to volunteer even though their home stood in ashes and some CCC board members shedding tears as we discussed our 4H families that lost everything and what we can do next. We are 4H Strong and Sonoma County Strong. There are many ways to jump in and help families. Please let us know what your club is doing and if other clubs can help. We will be serving at the Redwood Empire Food Bank as a county in January. There will be many more opportunities to serve and use our 4H's. Ohana, translated family in Hawaiian, is amazingly fitting as we have seen the 4H family this month rise up. Achievement night was fabulous, as always. Missy and Ariel planned and performed a great night of recognition for our youth. Surfboards that reflected each club, desserts that were too beautiful to eat, and friendships grown, are all thanks to Achievement Night. The winter will bring food, fun and community service. How about some youth send a letter to Jesenia about their experiences and projects?? Proud volunteer of Sonoma County 4H, Naomi Community Stories
Stories of 4-H families helping others in the wildfire crisis The UC Cooperative Extension 4-H staff wish to express our deepest condolences to those who have suffered a personal loss and who have been impacted by the fire siege. We found these stories inspiring us and wanted to share them with the 4-H community. Please share other stories at cesonoma4h@ucanr.edu. Helping our Community by Jill Wesselkamper
Thankfully, we sent out a last minute email inviting our club to attend the meeting, if they could, with the understanding that the majority of the meeting was going to be dedicated to making fleece blankets for those displaced children who may have lost or left their own behind. Our club showed up in force and over the course of 1 1/2 hours dads, moms, grandparents and kids prepped, cut and tied over 30 blankets! They have been distributed to the children of Rincon Valley School District as well as families in the Mark West and Coffey Park neighborhoods. The meeting proved inspiring for many as we are continuing to make blankets at home for ongoing donations. |

Salvation Army In the past few years, many clubs have donated time to assisting the Salvation Army in raising funds, by ringing the bell. This has been an activity to which many volunteers and members looked forward each holiday season. Our 4-H program will not be able to continue this participation going forward. The State has clarified the policy regarding this activity. Please see below. “As an example of a common activity proposed but is not within 4-H policy: holiday bell ringing for the Salvation Army. The Salvation Army is a group that falls within the category of a group of organization that is religious in nature or purpose. 4-H policies establish that 4-H units may not fundraise to support groups or organizations that fall within the category of being religious or political in nature or purpose. The purpose of this policy is to ensure that UC 4-H is not appearing to favor a particular religion(s). This program through the Salvation Army is religious-based and is centered around one specific religious holiday: Christmas. This would not be an organization that the 4-H club would work through. 4-H units must ensure the organization is not religious or political in nature, to stay within 4-H policy if they want to fundraise as a service learning activity to directly benefit a group or organization. “ Of course, individuals may participate with the Salvation Army outside of 4-H if they wish. Please contact me with any questions or comments. - Judy Ludovise |

The details: What: 2017 Capitol Corridor 4-H Leadership Summit: Explore, Discover, Engage! Sacramento County 4-H Program Representative, Jennifer Henkens: jahenkens@ucanr.edu Disney Be Inspired Summer of Service Grants The National Junior Master Gardener 4-H program has partnered with the WW1 Memorial Commission on a national service project for 4-H youth to be involved with building the WW1 Memorial. The Junior Master Gardener program is proud to promote because it ties to gardening! Groups can make a donation of $64.99 and receive 60 poppy seed packets from the WW1 Memorial Commission. They can then sell the seeds to support their program. The recommended selling price is $2 per seed packet which would generate $120. Basically the first dollar goes to fund the National WW1 memorial and the second dollar stays local for the 4-H club, school group, etc. to support their activities/programs. We are promoting through all of our JMG groups and state partners, but this is open for any and all 4-H groups. It is a great opportunity for youth to learn more about WW1, while also being a part of a national service project. Many resources, learning experiences and details on how to participate in the poppy project can be found at the website below: Groups can start now, but the big push is between Sept. 5 and October 20th. Representatives from 4 winning groups will be invited to experience an expense paid trip to the groundbreaking of the National WW1 Memorial in Washington DC in November.

Archery – Sept 9 & 10th Bay Coast Area Updates Main points: I am really looking to get a big group of Citizenship Weekend delegates outside of the typical sectional lines- this is a great opportunity for those with youth that are interested in CalFocus/CWF in the future but are too young/not ready, or those that can't attend one of those Citizenship conferences due to cost, timing, etc. If there are those that are interested from the far south or far north, I will try to organize carpool or a bus system so we can get kids to this amazing event. Thank you! Let me know if you have any questions! - Trent

From the 4-H Youth Development Advisor, Steven Worker President's Letter - Naomi Edwards As I walked around Sonoma County Fair and saw interactions between our youth and the public, I was beaming with pride. I watched young members being helped by older youth on show days, younger members showing the public what they had baked or crafted in Finley hall, and gorgeous displays of flowers and exhibits to show the public "Who 4-H is". Finley Hall was full of welding, woodwork, leather craft, sewing, pottery, art, fruits and vegetables, dried goods and baked goods. As I observed the barns, there were posters to educate the public and decorate the stalls. Sonoma County Fair was well attended and a great way to showcase 4-H. As the fall approaches we move into Officer training, enrollment, achievement night, and club activities. Hope to see you at as many events as you can attend! I am looking forward to another year of Making the Best, Better! - Naomi

From the 4-H Youth Development Advisor, Steven Worker President's Letter - Naomi Edwards
Hoping this letter finds you comfortable as you are getting ready for fair or camp, record books, and a new 4H year. Many youth have already show their fabulous, woodworking, art, photography, crafts, foods, plants, and animals at the Sonoma-Marin Fair, Congrats! Many of the youth are preparing for the end of some of their year long project planning at the Sonoma County Fair Aug 3-Aug 12. It is my hope that you have entered something so you can show the county your hard work, either in the form of an item or animal. If you have not entered go to the fair and be inspired! Many youth are at camp or finishing up the week as you read this. Thanks you to all those that graciously gave up their time to volunteer as youth staff or adult staff. Can't wait to hear how it was! Record Books are due August 19 and many youth are working diligently to finish up their recordbook. It is a valuable piece to see how far a youth has come in one year and what they have accomplished. I know, as a leader, I am already getting excited for new projects and youth that will be joining clubs in the fall. July 1 is the start of a new 4H year, so let's make it the best! See you at the fair, Naomi Edwards |
