One way to conserve water is to consider the impact doing laundry has on the environment. The typical American family washes on average 400 loads of laundry annually. Care should be taken to only wash full loads of laundry when necessary. The modern washing machine has made it ultra convenient to launder items. But, do all of those items truly require a thorough washing after a simple wear? Some garments can be worn twice and simply aired out if they are free of dirt, grime, sweat or stains. If our garments all had to be laboriously hand washed as in days of yore, we would reconsider what we considered truly dirty laundry. Beyond, this attention needs to be turned to washing with eco-friendly detergents. Natural, green detergents protect our waterways, our bodies and fabric fibers from harsh chemicals. Toxic chemicals are not required to clean laundry.
In fact, green laundry detergents are naturally clean-rinsing and free of detergent residue. Conventional, chemical-laden laundry detergents leave a sticky residue on "cleaned" clothing. This residue is a magnet for dirt, grime and odors. The end result is that your clothing and linens do not stay fresh for very long with traditional detergent brands. Which means that energy and water intensive cycle of laundry begins again. Every drop counts!
