Now is the time to look to our own close-by neighbors and offer help to the victims of the Valley Fire. Community Service in our OWN community.
I personally challenge EACH and EVERY club in our county, to put together donations or figure out a way that their club can help out. This means much more than just cleaning out the closet. Please see attached article for ideas about how you can help.
Please take a photo or let the office know by email how your club is helping. I would like something from EVERY club!
I'm starting a scrapbook that will be part of our Sonoma County 4-H history. But first I would like to cover our office wall with examples/photos of how 4-H is helping. This is a time of great need for so many people

The UC 4-H Youth Development Program is a Statewide program delivered locally. Young people participate in a variety of delivery modes including 4-H clubs, camps and afterschool programs in their local communities. A component of the 4-H program includes sectional and state 4-H events, activities and programs. These are a critical component of the 4-H youth development model, and are particularly appropriate as methods to support efficacy and mattering of teenagers.
Come to UC Davis on October 24th to hear about the vision for statewide programming in the next 100 years:
- A dynamic statewide 4-H Youth Development Program with opportunities for 4-H staff, volunteers and young people to be engaged in strategic visioning and program planning, delivery, management and evaluation.
- An integrated and cohesive fund development plan to support the growth of the 4-H program.
- Increased youth and volunteer participation in the organization and attendance of sectional and state activities, events, committees and programs.
- Attract new volunteers to 4-H to support growth and expansion of the program.
- Expand the reach of 4-H – touching the lives of more young people.

Sonoma Event looking for volunteers
- sonomanature.org and sonomabirding.com is having their 4th Annual Wine Country Optics and Nature Festival at the Plaza on Sunday, September 20th from 10am to 4pm. There will be over 50 nature organizations, musicians, artists and Native American organizations assembled to entertain and educate the public, and expected public attendance would be over 1,000. There will also be ten world class optics companies that manufacture binoculars and spotting scopes, and they will be there to demo and sell products. Even Smokey the Bear will be there! This is a partnership with Sonoma State Parks and is a free event.
- They are requesting volunteers to come help with setting up on Sunday between 8am and 10am at the Barracks - 20 Spain St. You would assist organizations with unloading falcons, owls hawks, tables, tents etc. They will also have attendee handouts for special program happening and a need to direct people to the "presentation series" in the Barracks lecture room, and potentially manning a both while folks step away for a break, keeping count…those types of things. At the end of the day, 4pm, they would need assistance with loading.
- They would appreciate any help you could give them, and this is another fantastic community service event that would be great in your record books for next year. Not to mention some undoubtedly awesome photo ops! Volunteers should meet at the Sonoma Barracks on the Plaza at approximately 8am, but please call or email Tom Rusert in advance at (707) 939-8007 or sonomanature@gmail.com so he can plan his strategy for the day and give you further information.
