Sometimes the work of Master Gardeners goes viral...and we love it! Recently Master Gardener Birgitt Evans of the Alameda County MG Program had an interview with Heather Woods, editor of a small, online paper in Alameda. Instead of staying local, it made a big splash all over the bay area. Her story was perfect because it shared not only a message about growing vegetables in the bay area in the winter but also highlighted the Master Gardener Program throughout the state and its association with the University of California.
The story starts with "Birgitt Evans knows dirt. The keeper of a large backyard garden in the East end, she sees the soil from two equally important angles: What it can do for people and what people should do in return". Evans is a Certified Master Gardener and one of only 3 on the island. The story then goes on to say that the Master Gardener Program is operated by the University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources Divison and has representatives in every county of California.. (well that is almost true)..and what it takes to become a certified Master Gardener.

Way to go Alameda County Master Gardeners! If you have a story you would like to share with the rest of the state, send me a note and I can post it here on the VMS blog site.

Did you know that Rockwall Winery (on the old Naval Base) grows vegetables in containers used for the grapes? Last time I was there it was thriving. Their caterer uses the fresh produce.
