I have the same gopher problem. I think it is because we live near vineyards. there is no getting rid of them other than to line each bed with hardware cloth. Yes, the Anise Swallowtails will over winter. I mount the pupa on cardboard with museum paste and hang them in a shelter place outside.

Pat, when these cats are ready to go into pupa, they start to wander looking for a good spot. I have had them pupate on strange places if they are not in a container of some kind. I often put a piece of cardboard in with them so they might settle on it.
