Happenings in the insect world

I've always wondered where these soldier beetles live during the winter and summer as I only see them in the springtime. Then, one day, I moved a piece of plywood sitting on the side of an ephemeral pond and about a hundred adult soldier beetles underneath scurried into little holes in the ground! Another plus for vernal pools where life thrives, including soldier beetles, underground, for protection from winter cold and summer heat.

Love it when I see these guys have arrived. I know they will clean-up the aphids. A few years ago I had a bad aphid infestation on my artichokes, once the soldier beetles arrive it was cleaned up in a day or two. Soldier beetles to the rescue!
