Alexandra - the most common milkweeds native to California are: narrow-leaved milkweed (Asclepias fascicularis), showy milkweed (Asclepias speciosa), California milkweed (Asclepias californica), heartleaf milkweed (Asclepias cordifolia), woolly milkweed (Asclepias vestita) and Indian woollypod milkweed (Asclepias eriocarpa). All these milkweeds can be started from seed but will take time. As plants they are not readily found in the nursery trade except the narrow-leaved milkweed. The plant can be found for sale at Santa Barbara Botanic Garden or other nurseries selling California native plants. In many nurseries you can find tropical milkweed (Asclepias curassavica), native to South America. It is used in many butterfly gardens like the one at Alice Keck Park Memorial Garden. Have fun with your garden.
