A beautiful iconic species, fairly large, where I live in inland Mendocino County. I've noticed it most in late spring, even in this drought year, and it can utilize old-fashioned garden flowers--the ones who we haven't bred the nectar and pollen capabilities out of!  
Watch for that pattern of white "dots" visible even when their wings are folded.
