The most recent discovery of invasive shothole borer-pathogen complex in Santa Cruz County has been identified as a different species of beetle and symbiotic fungi than the two complexes previously known in California. This third beetle-pathogen complex - Euwallacea interjectus-Fusarium floridanum - was previously introduced to the United States on three separate occasions and is most common in Alabama, Louisiana, Texas, Georgia, Florida, Mississippi, and South Carolina. In California, it has primarily attacked box elder, but the range of susceptible host tree species is currently being studied.
