Very helpful information. I assume this does not necessarily indicate an unhealthy environment for the tree? I've been fostering an oak sapling that I noticed last fall on my property and now that the buds have opened it looks exactly like the one pictured here, around the same date May 30th in southwest Michigan. I've been watering it periodically and there is good sunlight although the soil is very sandy and classified by the USGS as "excessive drainage". I'll keep it watered and keep my fingers crossed!.
