This trial was planted November 8, 1996, and harvested April 14, 1997. It was grown on a Modesto loam soil with excellent management. It was planted following triple crop sudangrass and received 50 units of nitrogen as ammonium sulfate preplant plus one application of diluted lagoon water in early spring. Each plot was 300 feet long and two passes wide. Each variety was replicated four times.

At harvest, a 30 foot section of windrow was chopped and weighed. Since this trial harvested all varieties at the same time, consider differences in growth stage at harvest when comparing yields because even a few days difference in maturity can greatly impact yield.

Many thanks to John Hertle Dairy, Mike Reed of Stanislaus Farm Supply, Richard Silva and Bert DeWinkle for their chopping assistance with this trial.
