Photo Information | One Day's Harvest - tomatoes, cucumbers, grapes, lettuce, and even an egg from our backyard hens. Most of the tomatoes were sauced and canned, or dried, the cucumbers were pickled, and the rest was eaten right away. |

Description | This photo was taken in July 2013, in my garden. It's fun for me to make still life arrangements of my daily harvests. I grew several varieties of heirloom tomatoes as well as cherry tomatoes that year (many cherry tomatoes don't make it out of my garden, getting consumed on the spot while they are still sun-warmed). Happily, our grapes, planted a couple of years earlier, had just started producing. And there's a white fig in the center - one of the first from our young tree grown from a cutting. The girls only gave us one egg that day (we have four chickens).I had recently graduated from the Master Food Preservers training, and was eager to try making my own dill pickles with cucumbers and dill I grew. I even had my own homegrown grape leaves to add (they help keep the pickles crisp). And I was already experienced using the dehydrator to preserve the tomatoes. |
