Photo Information Yum Sweet “Panachée” Figs
Photographer
Calder, Joan: UC Master Gardener Vol.
Description Picture taken in my garden at 302 Santa Anita Road in Santa Barbara, California August 12, 2015. This type of fig I thought unusual when I bought the tree and was concerned I would not like the fruit. After two years I realized what a gem it is. The fruit gets better with every passing year.Tiger Stripe or “Panachée” variety of Ficus carica are unique because of their “tiger” stripes of green and yellow. Beneath the green-ribbed skin lies a crimson-colored seeded pulp with a flavor similar to that of strawberry or raspberry jam. Everyone who sees my figs are surprised to see the green outside color and the sweet red inside. I love that I can grow food in my garden. The fig tree is one of eight fruit trees gracing my landscape.
