Building a Garden
Before planning out the garden, make sure you have filled out a Garden Strategic Plan for your site. Here are a couple of resources on building a garden:
Garden Design
Garden designs should reflect the wants and need of the community/school. Ask those that will be using it what they hope to do in the garden. Produce large amounts of food? An education space? For tastings?
Irrigation
Raised Beds
Try to use wood that will last a longer time:
- RedWood - more accessible in the Central Valley
- Cedar
For food producing garden beds:
- DO NOT use treated wood. Chemicals used to prevent the wood from rotting can leach into the soil and into the plants.
- DO NOT use tires. The chemicals in the tires will also leach into the soil. Use a protective cloth, a barrier, or landscaping fabric to separate the soil and the tire if you plan to do this.
Soil & Mulch
For small projects, you can purchase soil bags and mulch from your local retail store or nursery.
For larger projects, you can find bulk soil & mulch by searching "bulk soil Fresno" to find the nearest rockery near you.
