Spider mites

  • May 27, 2023
  • Did you know that spiders are not insects? Did you know that mites are spiders?

There are several differences between spiders and insects. Two of the most obvious are: Class Arachnida has two body parts and eight legs; Class Insecta has three body parts and six legs.
The University of California Integrated Pest Management Program describes spider mites as “among the most ubiquitous of all pests in the garden.” In California, they may feed and reproduce all year. However, the hot weather from June through September may cause a population explosion. The damage is caused by the mite sucking the cell contents from the leaves.

Fuchsias are subject to infestations of mites. Leaves and shoots may become ugly, thickened, and distorted. You can cut off the ends of branches and follow up with an insecticidal soap or horticultural oil. Insecticidal sprays are not recommended.
