Description of duties

The Texas A&M Department of Soil and Crop Sciences announces a vacancy for the position of Extension Weed Science Specialist located at the Texas A&M University Campus – College Station.  The position is a 12-month, non-tenure track position that is responsible for statewide leadership in development and delivery of educational programs and materials related to integrated weed management in row crops, pastures, home lawns, golf courses, and sports fields in Texas. The successful candidate is expected to develop an innovative and nationally-recognized outreach program focused on economically sound and ecologically sustainable strategies to address weed issues in these important systems. Given the widespread occurrence and spread of herbicide-resistant weeds in various production systems, the scientist is expected to develop a strong outreach program to foster awareness on best management practices. The incumbent will also help educate the public regarding the safe use of herbicides necessary to enhance food production, while at the same time protecting the environment.  These outreach efforts will include, but not limited to, grower meetings, Extension publications, newsletters, and social media outlets.The successful candidate will interact with extension regional program leaders, county extension agents, and other extension specialists and research faculty in building a successful extension and outreach program. Collaboration with other weed scientists at state and national levels and interaction with other faculty in the departments of Entomology, Plant Pathology, Ecosystem Science & Management, Horticulture, and other appropriate entities within Texas A&M is expected in order to develop and deliver new knowledge regarding weed management.  Development of educational resources including conventional and web-based publications, newsletters, and social media outlets, will be required to deliver information on profitable and sustainable production systems. The successful candidate will be expected to obtain extramural funds, attend professional meetings, publish results in refereed journals, publish timely extension fact sheets, and train graduate students as appropriate.

Qualifications sought

Required:

  • An earned Ph.D. in Weed Science, Agronomy, Crop Science, Soil Science or other closely related field.
  • Excellent and demonstrated oral, written, and electronic communication skills
  • Field research experience with production systems in agronomic crops
  • The incumbent is required to pass a criminal background check.

 Preferred:

  • Field research and/or extension experience in row crops, turf, and forage production
  • A documented background in the acquisition of external grant funds
  • Experience in extension education or the equivalent
