DESCRIPTION
The Department of Plant Sciences in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences at the University of California, Davis is recruiting an Assistant/Associate Professor of Weed Science with a research emphasis on the physiological/biological/ecological processes of weedy plants in croplands or natural areas. This is an academic year (9-month), tenure track, Assistant/Associate Professor position that includes the expectation of research and outreach relevant to the California Agricultural Experiment Station.
The Department of Plant Sciences is seeking applicants that focus on fundamental aspects of weed biology lead to improved weed management. The appointee is expected to establish a competitively funded research program that addresses critical or emerging issues in weed science. Focus areas could include seed/bud dormancy and development, seed bank dynamics, allelopathy, vegetative propagation, herbicide physiology, or interactions of weeds with the environment including the soil microbial community. The appointee is expected to provide leadership in weed biology for the advancement of weed management in conventional and/or organic systems. The appointee's research program could utilize the tools of plant physiology, ecology, biochemistry, or genomics to understand weed persistence in order to develop new approaches to managing weeds. Approaches could include molecular, physical, chemical, genomic or ecological manipulations of weed growth or seed production. The successful candidate will have opportunities to collaborate with colleagues with complementary expertise in basic and applied plant science research.
The appointee will be responsible for instruction of 1.5 courses per year prior to tenure and at least two classes a year after tenure. Teaching responsibility will include an undergraduate Introduction to Weed Science course (PLS 176), one quarter per year of Botany and Physiology of Cultivated Plant (PLS 2), and an upper division course on weed biology and management or other upper division Weed Science course. Teaching responsibilities may also include other key courses critical to the department, as well as curriculum development, as assigned by the department chair to meet department, college and campus needs.
Enthusiastic and effective student advising and mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students and postdoctoral fellows is expected. Participation in and development of public outreach and/or community engagement programs, and departmental and university service is also expected. This appointee will work with Cooperative Extension Specialists and Advisors, partners in allied industries and other appropriate public stakeholders.
This recruitment is conducted at the Assistant/Associate rank. The resulting hire will be at the Assistant or Associate rank, regardless of the proposed appointee's qualifications.
Qualifications: Ph.D. or equivalent in a field of plant physiology, biology, ecology, genetics or related discipline with strong emphasis on weed science. Post-doctoral experience is preferred. Evidence of research excellence is expected. The candidate should have the ability to develop and instruct undergraduate and graduate courses and the ability to develop and conduct extramural funded research in weed science.
Salary: Commensurate with qualifications and credentials.
