Pistachios

Pistachio is an important nut crop in the state of California, with 521.8 million pounds of pistachios worth more than 1158.40 million dollars produced in the state in 2010 (USDA-NASS, 2010). Over the past decade, the bearing acreage under pistachios has increased by 84%, which is a far greater increase observed in acreage under walnut (14%) and almonds (45%) over the same period of time. In the Fresno county alone, the number of bearing pistachio acres has increased roughly three times in the past decade and pistachio emerged in top ten crops in Fresno county (by dollar value) in the recent years (Department of Agriculture, Fresno County).
