4-H Project Members Page
Your next adventure awaits!
Welcome 4-H Adventurer! I am so glad you have joined this project. Each meeting I will give you the coordinates to your next challenge.
Your meeting 1 challenges can be found here.
To complete the challenge:
1) Download and install a mapping program onto a smart phone. I like to use Google Maps.
2) Set aside a couple of hours to locate and complete your challenge. You can go at any time, but perhaps the alternating Wednesdays at 3:30 when we are not on Zoom would be a good time to go? Then you may see some of your 4-H friend's (and me!) out completing their challenge at the same time.
3) Pack up some water, healthy snack, a face mask, some hand sanitizer, your smart phone and your sense of adventure. If you have a 4-H shirt or sweatshirt, please wear it. The coordinates given at each meeting will be close to one another. But they may be in Woodland for the first adventure, Davis for the second, and West Sacramento for the third, and so on.
4) If you are going with siblings, determine who will be the first navigator. Make sure to take turns every other week. The navigator will need to give directions to the driver who is taking you out on this adventure. Have your driver read these agreements before you go.
5) Type in the gps coordinates of your first location.
6) Guide the driver to this destination. Take the time to learn:
- north/east/south/west orientation.
- how lanes are numbered and oriented.
- how far a half mile, mile, 5 miles is so you can give the next step at the correct time.
- how your driver prefers to be told of upcoming turns (such as "you need to get into the right lane so you can turn right in one mile).
- while your map program/smart phone may read the directions aloud, I would practice opening the list option and guiding your driver that way.
7) Once you are at the location, you will need to find the closest parking spot on your own and walk the rest of the way. The gps coordinates are for the actual signage location, not the parking location.
8) Switch to walking mode on your map app. Walk to the location. Search for the sign. It will look like this:
9) Once you find the sign, scan the QR code (that black and white patterned graphic in the middle of the sign) by opening your camera and then holding your phone up as if you were going to take a picture of it. A link to a website page will pop up on your screen. Click on that link.
10) Read through the activity directions. Complete as many levels for that activity as you can (beginner/intermediate/advanced).
11) As you complete the activity, think of anything that might make it better, easier to understand, or more fun. Send these ideas to me by completing the comments section at the bottom of each activity directions page.
12) Take a picture of yourself doing the activities and post it with the hashtag #yolo4H. Post it to our project padlet. Only post photos that you are willing to have shared on our 4-H Facebook page or other social media platforms.
13) Once you are done with the activity, type in the gps coordinates for the next one and navigate your way to the area where you will find the next sign. You will have 3 or 4 challenges given out at each meeting.
14) Each activity also includes instructions for something you can do at home. Select at least one of these to do before the next project meeting. You can take photos of yourself completing these as well and post with the hashtag #yolo4H and on the padlet page.
14) Be prepared to discuss the activity at the next project meeting and share your photos.
15) I will track participation and engagement, so for every comment you leave, photo you share, or at-home activity you complete, you will get points. Treasures will be given along the way for those that are the most adventurous!
