Enhancing our leadership and collaboration
Coming together, keeping together and working together during unprecedented times.
Although we live in challenging times, few organizations are managing those challenges as well as UC ANR. Throughout our community, at every level, staff and academics have innovated and found new ways to ensure that our local communities continue to be served by our programs, our research and our partnerships. You have all shown your ability to adapt and have demonstrated a high level of resilience in a continually changing and unprecedented environment these past months. Yet, even resilience requires renewal and revitalization.
Therefore, as we continue to adjust to ongoing change, I want to encourage all UC ANR people – supervisors and individual contributors alike – to tap more deeply into their collaborative and team building potential by completing the UC People Management Certificate Series within the next year.
ANR as a whole will benefit from our individual understanding of the basic tenets of employee engagement, team building, setting clear expectations, clear communication and collaboration. On an individual basis, you will gain a deeper understanding and tools to enhance your people skills, collaboration skills, prioritizing work, implicit bias awareness, being an effective team member, and preparing yourself for leadership roles.
There are 16 required and 4 elective modules which range from 15-25 minutes. Included in the required modules are topics such as “Giving and Receiving Feedback”, “Coaching for Performance and Development”, and “What is Implicit Bias?” In the elective course section, topics include “Building Collaborative Relationships,” “Move Forward with Change Planning” and “UC Responding to Conflict.” They are well worth your investment of time – both as professional development and personal growth.
Let's continue to champion the amazing work we all do by delving into people management.
Once you have completed the series, please contact learninganddevelopment@ucanr.edu for your digital certificate.
As always, many thanks for the great work you do!
Stay safe out there,
Glenda
Nominate a colleague for UC Women’s Initiative for Professional Development
The call for nominations for the UC Women's Initiative for Professional Development has started. This program aims to cultivate a vibrant, professional network of women across the UC system, and is designed for mid-career women, including academics and staff, who demonstrate the potential to advance their careers within UC.
Again this year, ANR will be sponsoring women (academics and staff) to participate in the 2018 program. The program schedule has been modified for 2018 to reduce the time commitment and to provide more timing options, with regional sessions offered in the winter, spring and fall.
Six regional cohorts (three in the north and three in the south) will be offered.
Each cohort program is comprised of four sessions:
- First session of each cohort is 1.5 days, remaining sessions will be 1 day each
- Final session of each cohort program will be a combined north & south capstone event that allows participants to make systemwide connections
The experiential program requires full, active participation; only UC ANR employees who can commit to this will be selected. More details about the expectations and logistics are included on the nomination form.
If you are interested in participating in this program, please talk to your supervisor. Supervisors are asked to send in nominations by close of business October 31. Late or incomplete nominations will not be considered.
Nominations should include name, a brief description of how this program will support the nominee's career development and benefit ANR, and supervisor consent. The program is a collaboration between the UC Systemwide Advisory Committee on the Status of Women and UC Human Resources, and is delivered by CORO, a nonprofit leadership-development organization that has worked with UC for the past decade. UC President Napolitano supports and partially funds the program. ANR will cover registration fees and reimburse travel expenses for those selected.
Last year's program was very successful. Katherine Soule, Valerie Borel, Jan Gonzales, Margaret Lloyd, and Robin Sanchez completed the 2017 program, and shared the benefit of developing leadership skills and a network across the UC system.
If you have questions about the program, please contact Jodi Azulai, the staff representative on the Systemwide Advisory Committee on the Status of Women.

Seeking nominations for Women’s Initiative for Professional Development
Dear Colleagues,
I am pleased to call for nominations for the UC Women's Initiative for Professional Development. This program aims to cultivate a vibrant, professional network of women across the UC system, and is designed for mid-career women, including academics and staff, who demonstrate the potential to advance their careers within UC.
Along with the campuses, ANR has the opportunity to send four women through the 2017 program: two in the Northern California cohort and two in the Southern California cohort, with one ANR staff person and one ANR academic in each cohort.
The program consists of four monthly in-person, day-and-a-half seminars from February to May 2017, with assignments in between. The experiential program requires full, active participation; only UC employees who can commit to this will be selected. More details about the expectations and logistics are included on the nomination form.
If you are interested in participating in this program, please talk to your supervisor. Supervisors are asked to send in nominations by close of business Nov. 4 to Katherine Webb-Martinez at katherine.webb-martinez@ucop.edu. Nominations should include name, a brief description of how this program will support the nominee's career development and benefit ANR, and supervisor consent.
The program is a collaboration between the UC Systemwide Advisory Committee on the Status of Women and UC Systemwide Talent Management, and is delivered by CORO, a nonprofit leadership-development organization that has worked with UC for the past decade. UC President Napolitano supports and partially funds the program. ANR will provide the remaining funds for those selected.
Last year's pilot program was very successful. Katherine Webb-Martinez and Tunyalee Martin completed the 2016 program, and shared with me the benefit of developing leadership skills and a network across the UC system.
If you have questions about the program, please contact Katherine Webb-Martinez, the staff representative on the Systemwide Advisory Committee on the Status of Women.
Regards,
Glenda

Professional Development for After-School Program Staff
The April-June 2010 issue of Applied Developmental Science contains an article by Joseph Mahoney, Mark Levine, and Briana Hinga entitled "The Development of After-School Program Educators Through University-Community Partnerships." The article describes approaches to staff development and promising practices in partnerships with universities to improving professional development for these staff members. Research on the effectiveness of such staff development is limited. Model programs are described that are provided by the UC Irvine Department of Education, which offers a Certificate in After-school Education focusing on positive youth development, and CUNY in New York and The After-School Corporation, which together launched a Center for After-School Excellence that offers classes to enhance the capabilities of after-school staff. Both pre-service and in-service training are available in these models.
