Summary/Abstract from Original Source
This fact sheet contains a list of 10 suggested management goals for sustainable cool-season vegetable production. These goals are:
- Evaluate current irrigation and fertilization practices and plan improvements in management.
- Avoid fertilizer material spills during all phases of transport, storage, and application.
- Base the amount and timing of N fertilizer applications on crop needs and production goals.
- Place N fertilizer materials where maximum plant uptake will occur.
- Minimize leaching losses of nitrate during non-crop periods.
- Operate irrigation systems to minimize deep percolation and N losses.
- Improve the uniformity of existing furrow irrigation.
- Improve the uniformity of existing sprinkler irrigation.
- Improve the uniformity of existing drip irrigation.
- Evaluate and maintain nutrient management goals and recommended practices.
Each goal also includes details for achieving it.
