Summary/Abstract from Original Source

This report discusses considerations that growers should make regarding changes in nitrogen management in response to increased regulation of nitrate concentrations in irrigation runoff.

Research Highlights

Design and Methods

This brief report presents the main concerns regarding nitrate contamination in ground and surface water, the regulations regarding nitrate content of irrigation runoff and associated issues, and some recommended approaches to limit nitrate leaching losses.

Results

The report recommends the following approaches for efficient nitrogen management to protect water sources:

  • Approach N fertilizer management using an N budget.
  • Control irrigation to limit in-season leaching.
  • Use winter cover crops.
