Faculty
Faculty that focus on poultry
The University of California system has many resources for poultry health, welfare, and science. Cooperative Extension, at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, provides teaching, research and service programs on disease prevention, production quality control, biotechnology, food safety and animal well-being.
Here is a list of poultry-related resources at Cooperative Extension and the University of California in general:
Dr. Mary E. Delany, PhD
Developmental Genetics
UC Davis College of Biological Sciences
2223B Meyer Hall
Davis, CA 95616
medelany@ucdavis.edu
Research Interests: Dr. Delany's research focuses on avian telomere biology, with chicken being the primary organism under study. Other interests include gene mapping and chromosome organization, congenital and inherited developmental mutations, and conservation of poultry and avian genetic resources.
Dr. Rodrigo Gallardo, DVM, PhD
Population Health & Reproduction
UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine
4009 VM3B
Davis, CA 95616
ragallardo@ucdavis.edu
Research Interests: Dr. Gallardo's research interests are in the area of the avian virology, specifically in RNA viruses and their capabilities of mutation, recombination and variation that make them very difficult to control in productive settings.
Dr. Alec Gerry, PhD
College of Natural and Agricultural Sciences
UC Riverside
0367 Entomology Building
Riverside, CA 92521
alec.gerry@ucr.edu
Research Interests: Dr. Gerry is interested in developing novel strategies to reduce the production and dispersal of arthropod pests and disease vectors associated with animal agriculture. His laboratory also has an interest in developing a better understanding of the role arthropods play in the persistence and transmission of animal pathogens.
Dr. Annie King, PhD
Department of Animal Science
UC Davis College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences
1217 Meyer Hall
Davis, CA 95616
ajking@ucdavis.edu
Research Interests: Dr. King's research, teaching and outreach concentrate on the nutritional quality of poultry meat, eggs and their products, as well as use of agricultural by-products containing antioxidants in poultry feed.
Dr. Joy A. Mench, PhD
Department of Animal Science
UC Davis College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences
jamench@ucdavis.edu
Research Interests: Dr. Mench's research focuses on the assessment and improvement of animal welfare. She conducts behavioral research on poultry (chickens, quail, ducks) directed toward improving aspects of their housing, handling, and management.
Dr. Asli Mete, DVM, MSc, PhD
Clinical Pathology, Microbiology & Immunology
California Animal Health & Food Safety Lab
CAHFS
Davis, CA 95616
amete@ucdavis.edu
Research Interests: Dr. Mete's work focuses on diagnostic pathology and spontaneous diseases.
Dr. Bradley A. Mullens, PhD
College of Natural and Agricultural Sciences
UC Riverside
Entomology 268
Riverside, CA 9252
bradley.mullens@ucr.edu
Research Interests: Dr. Mullens' laboratory focuses on the biology, ecology, and integrated management of arthropod pests of livestock, poultry and wildlife.
Dr. Anita Oberbauer, PhD
Department of Animal Science
UC Davis College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences
2223B Meyer Hall
Davis, CA 95616
amoberbauer@ucdavis.edu
Research Interests: Dr. Oberbauer's research program has two areas of emphasis: a) growth and development focusing on the skeleton in driving the relationship between skeletal size and body composition and b) the genetic basis for health disorders and other traits in dogs.
Dr. Maurice E. Pitesky, DVM, MPVM, ACVPM
Population Health & Reproduction
UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine
4007 VM3B
Davis, CA 95616
mepitesky@ucdavis.edu
Research Interests: Dr. Pitesky’s primary interests are in spatial and temporal epidemiology of avian diseases, food safety, and sustainability with respects to poultry production. Please feel free to contact Dr. Pitesky with any questions.
Dr. Huaijun Zhou, PhD
Department of Animal Science
UC Davis College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences
2247 Meyer Hall
Davis, CA 95616
hzhou@ucdavis.edu
Research Interests: Dr. Zhou's group is focused on elucidating the molecular and cellular mechanisms of host-pathogen interaction including disease resistance, immune response, and pathogenesis of infection. He is also involved in the Feed the Future Innovation Lab for Genomics to Improve Poultry (Improving food security in Africa by enhancing resistance to Newcastle disease and heat stress in chickens.)
