Hartford Volunteer Insurance
ANR has worked with The Hartford Insurance Company to provide accident insurance coverage to protect our appointed volunteers if they are injured during the course of their volunteer activities. Separate policies covers 4-H youth members, adult 4-H volunteers, and one-time participants in 4-H activities or programs. The links below provide information about the insurance policies and the forms to submit a claim.
Additionally, volunteers/4-H members should be advised that the Hartford policy limit is $10,000 and is secondary to their own private medical insurance. If an injury occurs while participating in an ANR volunteer activity or 4-H event, adult volunteers or 4-H families are advised to use their personal medical insurance first. The Hartford policy should be used to cover their out-of-pocket expenses only, i.e. co-pays, emergency medical treatment fees, medicine/drugs, etc. or for any invoices they receive for treatment of injuries that their primary insurance does not cover, or can be used if they have no insurance. All volunteers and 4-H members should submit their out-of-pocket receipts and/or invoices and a completed Hartford claim form to their county 4-H/MG/MFP office representative and the county office will verify, sign and submit the claim to Hartford along with receipts for reimbursement to the volunteer or payment to the medical facility.
The Hartford Insurance is an added benefit for ANR adult volunteers/4-H members only; and is intended to be used to reimburse for out-of-pocket expenses that are not paid by the volunteer/members’ primary health insurance, or if the volunteer/member does not have health insurance, to pay invoices for treatment received. For example, if a volunteer/4-H member is injured at camp or an activity and a medi-vac is used to transport them to the nearest medical facility for treatment/surgery, the medi-vac cost for someone with no insurance may be as high as $40,000. In this instance, the Hartford policy $10,000 limit would be exhausted and the injured person would not be reimbursed for any additional out of pocket expenses and have a remaining bill of $30,000. However, if they have insurance, for example, (Kaiser, Sutter Health, Health net, etc.) these insurance companies normally have negotiated rates for their members for services and the cost would be considerably less and the injured person would still be able to submit their co-pay receipts for treatment, medicine, etc. to the Hartford for reimbursement or submit their invoices.
