Obtain the necessary equipment

The right equipment is needed for raising honey bees, and producing honey and wax for sale or hobby.

Visit the Equipment & Maintenance section for a listing and description of basic beekeeping equipment.

If you are interested in collecting honey or producing other products of the hive, check with beekeeping suppliers and experienced beekeepers to learn more about specific equipment and tools. There are many online beekeeping supply resources online; however, you are welcome to check the Resources section for a list of some suppliers shared at UC Cooperative Extension San Diego beekeeping trainings.

Before harvesting honey and other hive by-products for sale, learn and follow the policies and permit requirements for cottage food operations. There may be additional supplies and equipment necessary to meet your objectives.
