CONES: California Online Naturalist Event Series

CONES Spring_Summer_lg 2021

Welcome to CONES, the California Online Naturalist Event Series. This series is created by and for California Naturalists and Climate Stewards to connect across the state on topics including natural history, ecology, climate change, and the intersections of pressing human and environmental issues. While we're not checking IDs at the door, we're also not advertising beyond our community of certified California Naturalists and Climate Stewards to ensure we create a space to connect and grow together. A recording of each talk will be available to the public afterward, pending speaker approval.

California has the highest biodiversity of any place in North America, due in part to past climate changes. During the Pleistocene California became a refugia for species that were otherwise facing extinction elsewhere on the continent. Now we are facing a new and different climate change. Community Scientists, often energized by taking California Naturalist classes, are uniquely positioned to participate in science, documenting if and how California's rich biodiversity is adjusting to this new climate challenge.

Dr. Cameron Barrows is the UC Environmental Stewards Lead Scientist and an Associate Research Ecologist with UC Riverside coordinating the Center for Conservation Biology's Desert Studies Initiative. The initiative develops risk assessments and implements regional conservation programs for desert flora, fauna and natural communities and enhances secondary level science education in surrounding schools.

This presentation is part of the California Biodiversity Day celebration happening from September 7-15 with events across the state. To learn more about events happening in your area, head to this link.
