Program:  Japanese Maples exhibit an essence of grace, beauty, tastefulness, elegance, mood, and feeling.  These trees are beloved by many people, not only for their brilliant fall color, but also for their leaf shape, texture, delicacy, and as a four-season tree.  This class will cover the techniques needed to prune maple trees, including seasonal pruning, proper care, trouble analysis, winter silhouette, form enhancement, as well as cultivar variations, tree selection, and planting.

Speaker:  Grant Foerster spent his Bay Area childhood up a tree and has yet to come down.  Along the way he has worked as a staff gardener at San Francisco’s Japanese Garden in Golden Gate Park, received a degree in Engineering Hydrology from UC Davis, taught as part of the Merritt College Aesthetic Pruning series, co-founded the Aesthetic Pruners Association, and served as its founding president.  Currently he serves as the APA Education Committee Chair, and hosts a Bonsai studio.  For the past 20 years he has run his own Aesthetic Pruning business with a focus on interpreting Japanese pines and maples and the gardens they reside in.
