The UC Giannini Foundation was established in 1930 to promote and support research and outreach activities in agricultural economics and rural development relevant to California. The Foundation publishes a bimonthly magazine titled ARE Update, which serves as a conduit for research results and expert opinion from faculty and graduate students in agricultural and resource economics at UC Davis and UC Berkeley.

Update targets a lay audience of policy makers, Cooperative Extension advisors, agribusiness managers, and other professionals interested in agricultural, resource, environmental and development economics.

In the most recent issue, July/August 2011, authors revisit the drought, jobs and controversy of 2009; review the challenges associated with in biomass ethanol production; and present results of experiments that aim to understand the effect of calorie information on consumer choices.
