The two of us, Wittko and myself, studied chemistry in Hamburg together from the very beginning, attending the same lectures and laboratory courses - and consequently we stayed together pretty close. We jointly prepared for the diploma examen, taking turns meeting in Reinbek and in Blankenese (our domicles at that time), giving release to the tiring process of learning by playing table tennis (where Wittko clearly dominated). In harmony with Wittko, I decided to continue (and finalize) my academic career in Hamburg - but contrasting him (an organic chemist) in the Institute of Inorganic Chemistry. We remained, of course, in close contact, even scientifically (my field was bioinorganic chemistry; and hence there had been points of contact with Wittko also with respect to certain research aspects). The chemical community certainly lost a humanitarian and scientifically outstanding person.

November 28th 2020.Congratulations by phone to Wittko on his 80th birthday and his outstanding scientific work.
Happily, he told me that the whole family had arrived for celebrating his birthday.
Weeks later, all came to a bitter end.
Slowly the black curtain is lifting, giving free the remembrance to our joined research activities in the great national projects. They were directed to the pollution of the rivers Elbe, Mulde and Odra. Wittko was covering the organic problems, we the inorganic ones.
His creative and effective non-target screening was remarkable. An abundance of, in part, extremely toxic compounds were identified and their metabolism described, forming the basis of the rehabilitation of the landscapes.
All these works, as well as those in his other research areas, were based on
Wittko's deeply founded personality and humanity.
He will be missed by everyone who had the privilege of working together with him.
