Closed Captions

Zoom has built in accessibility tools to make it easier for all attendees to have a better user experience. Closed Captioning is one of the Zoom tools to improve accessibility. Closed Captioning does need to be set up both by the Host, and the Attendee desiring Closed Captioning.

Set up for Host

Host will go to https://ucanr.zoom.us/log in, and then in the left hand navigation under the heading of Personal, click on the Settings tab.

Scroll down on the page, to find Manual Captions and Auto Captions

There are several options to choose from. Manual Captions, Automated Captions, Full Transcript, and Save Captions.

Manual Captions

Turning on Manual Captions will allow for the host or host's partner to manually type in Captions.  Within Manual Captions are two other options:

Automated Captions

Allows users to enable automated captions in meetings.

It's recommended to have both Manual and Automated Captions enabled  as Hosts using older Zoom Software may not be able to turn on Automated Captions.

In the Zoom App

Set up for Attendee

Once a Zoom meeting is started, and the host has enabled Closed Captions, Attendees must enable Closed Captions for themselves in the Zoom App.

Click on CC - Live Transcript

  • Subtitles will display at the bottom of the screen. The viewer will  have the option to hide subtitles.
  • Full Transcript opens a new window and displays a time-stamped and labeled script, created in real time.

End of Meeting - Transcript, Video and Audio Files

If a host has enabled Auto Recording and Closed Captioning, a transcript, video and audio will be saved when a meeting is ended. Default local location appears to be \Documents\zoom. If you saved to the cloud then a popup will give you the location of the files.  Going to your zoom account on the portal will give you the locations of the files also.
