Hardware for Zoom
Microphones
The Microphone (Mic) in your laptop is often adequate for most Zoom Meetings, but sometimes a better Mic is called for when audio quality is essential.
Required:
A method of attaching the Mic to your computer or Dock. This can be a Mic with attached or detachable cable with the proper connector for your equipment. Some laptops may still have a 1/8" mini connector for a Mic, while others may require a Mic that has a standard USB connector or a USB-C connector. It can vary quite a bit.
If multiple Mics are required or your Mic has a professional connector such as a 3 pin xlr, then a compatible Mixer will be needed to combine the Mics and adjust the sound levels. It will also need to connect to your computer via USB, USB-C or Thunderbolt (modern Macs).
There are Mics to place on your desktop and mics that need their own free standing boom stand or similar. To avoid noise of desktop vibrations, knocks or thumps, or if you are a wiggler it's recommended to using a Mic on Stand that does not attach to your desk. A Boom Stand Mic holder is a better choice.
Mic placement can be crucial for getting better audio quality. It depends on the type and brand of Mic. Usually the owner's manual will give a recommendation.
- Dynamic Microphones
- These are the most common Mic often used in live sound applications due to their resistance to loud sounds.
- Condensor Microphones
- Are typically brighter and fuller sounding than dynamic mics.
- Ribbon Microphones
- Able to capture the loudest sound directly in front while minimizing any extraneous sound. Tend to capture the clearest sound.
Microphone patterns.
A Lavaliere mic, typically a condensor or dynamic design, is clipped to your shirt close to your vocal chords. It can easily pick up rustling of clothing or handling.
