Biography
Dawn Kooyumjian is Coordinator for the UC Master Gardener Programs of Alameda and Contra Costa Counties. She taught plant identification and drought tolerant garden design for the Department of Landscape Architecture at UC Berkeley. She holds a Masters of Landscape Architecture, and is an International Society of Arboriculture Certified Arborist.
Her approach to teaching is both holistic and dynamic. Her energy, enthusiasm and passion inspire students to explore and delve deeply and widely into the subject at hand. Key to understanding is how the plants operate as part of a dynamic and living system. Her students hone their observational skills while learning to think critically.
For many years, she was a staff horticulturist at Blake Garden, the teaching and research garden for UCB’s Landscape Architecture Department, where she tended, observed, and documented the plant
collection. Her teaching and knowledge is firmly rooted in practical experience.
She is committed to broadening the reach of the UC MGP to all members of the community, and especially interested in the role of UCCE in urban ecosystems.
Additionally, she is fascinated by the intersection of the visual and musical arts, actively exploring how these different disciplines influence and inspire each other.
