Get hands-on experience and expert guidance to enhance your video production skills. Strategic Communications will hold a series of videography training workshops developed based on input UC ANR colleagues provided in a recent survey.
Videography, audio production, editing
Academics are invited to learn photographic theory, smartphone video production, and equipment recommendations at a two-day workshop. The first session will be in-person only and held Nov. 20-21 in Davis. The workshop is limited to 25 participants and participants will need to cover their own travel.
Videography 101
In this three-hour course, participants will learn:
- Photographic theory - framing, composition, screen direction, aspect ratio, exposure, color temperature, and depth of field
- Nomenclature and shooting techniques for both supported and unsupported image capture
- Methodology and preparation using shot lists, shooting schedules, interview question formulation, and the BLuRS production sequence
ANR videographer Ethan Ireland will describe how to achieve basic production goals and adequate image acquisition using smartphone camera apps. He will discuss the benefits and drawbacks of video production using these devices and recommend equipment to purchase.
Audio Production 101
This three-hour course will provide:
- Field recording basics including level-setting, audio monitoring, recording environments, microphone types and pick-up patterns, and cables, connectors and adapters
- Basic audio postproduction including ingesting and organizing files, normalizing audio levels, cleaning up “bad” audio, and synchronizing audio with video
In addition, attendees will be provided with comparisons of competing nonlinear audio editing applications (e.g., Adobe Audition, Audacity, daVinci Resolve).
Editing 101 (second day)
This four-hour course will cover editing theory and visual storytelling via:
- Psychology (the Kuleshov effect), types of cuts and when to make them (e.g., jump cuts, match cuts, smash cuts, transitions), and how to assemble a scene using a master and inserts
- Comparison and contrast between nonlinear editing platforms
- Establishment of basic/universal principles including organization of your editor, ordering your timeline, and sequence presets
- Exploration of common editing tools like lift, extract, splice, overwrite and roll edit

A 30-minute webinar on “UC ANR's Programmatic Footprint Maps: Using the maps with new secondary data to inform position proposals” will be presented Nov. 9 from noon to 12:30 p.m.
UCCE Programmatic Footprint Maps illustrate current positions for UCCE advisors, UCCE specialists, other UCCE academics and community educators, as well as the UCCE advisor and specialist positions under recruitment.
Newly available secondary data layers provide county-level data with relevant information which, when coupled with local knowledge, can help illuminate gaps and needs to inform UCCE position-proposal development and future hiring.
Join Katherine Webb-Martinez, director of Program Planning and Evaluation; Han Pham financial analyst and reporting manager; Nathan Ritchie, financial analyst; Christopher Hanson, system administrator for ANR computer-based reporting systems; and Shane Feirer and Robert Johnson of IGIS on Zoom to discuss how to use the maps.

The UC ANR Business Operations Center has begun loaning credit card machines on a short-term basis for payment card acceptance during sales and events.
Ten credit card machines are available on request on a short-term, first-come, first-served basis for $10 per day plus the cost of shipping and transaction fees. Borrowers must complete three required security trainings and allow at least 10 business days after they submit their request for the machine to be delivered.
ANR launched the much-anticipated Credit Card Machine Program on October 9.
The Business Operations Center (worked with many partners to implement this new service including administrative units, UCCEs and statewide programs. We gained valuable feedback from survey data and focused discussions, allowing us to plan for an effective program with everyone in mind.
Our appreciation goes out to many individuals who worked closely with us to enable electronic payments and debit/credit card sales at all our on-site events across ANR.
Special thanks to everyone who made the UC ANR Credit Card Machine Program possible!
Specifically, we'd like to acknowledge:

Andy Lyons, program coordinator for the Informatics and GIS Statewide Program (IGIS) and Elizabeth Moon, director of Workplace Inclusion & Belonging, attended the Land-Grant Partners Summit in Denver on Oct. 12-13.
The Land-Grant Partners is an alliance of 1862 land grant universities working to develop collaborations with 1994 Land Grant Institutions, i.e., tribal colleges and universities. The Land-Grant Partners project began in response to the article “Land-grab Universities: Expropriated Indigenous land is the foundation of the land-grant university system,” published in High Country News on March 30, 2020. The article revealed that Native lands were taken to fund the original land-grant institutions.
While they were in Denver, Moon and Lyons were able to attend the first day of the 2023 FALCON Conference (First Americans Land-Grant Consortium), which was held immediately after the Land-Grant Partners Summit.
“We were not formally representing ANR at either of these events,” said Lyons, “but went to listen and learn what other states are doing, in the hopes of joining forces and ultimately connecting the many people in ANR trying to deepen our relationships with tribes with colleagues in other states.”
They wrote a short blog post about the two conferences. It's posted on the IGIS blog and Together@Work blog. The story includes an interactive map of land grant colleges and universities.
The two-year tribal college Deganawidah-Quetzalcoatl University, or D–Q University, is not currently operating in Yolo County. However California Tribal College is administering their program through Woodland Community College.
